My name is Chelsea Puls, and I’m currently studying a Diploma of Sport and a Diploma of Leadership and Management at Richmond Institute.
Sport has always been a huge part of my life, so deciding where to study after high school was a big decision. I was torn between enrolling in Occupational Therapy at Swinburne University or following my passion for sport in a more hands-on environment.
During high school, I came across Richmond Institute’s TikTok page, which highlighted the real-life experiences of its students and showcased the hands-on learning opportunities available. Intrigued, I explored their Instagram and official website to learn more. Coming from a family that’s always been heavily involved in sport, it felt natural to continue on this path. I couldn’t imagine who I’d be without sport in my life — it’s shaped me, challenged me, and connected me with others. That connection made the decision to study at Richmond Institute feel like the right one.
From my very first interactions with the Institute — like attending a High Performance Day and the induction session for new students — I’ve felt welcomed and supported. The staff have made my transition from high school to further education so smooth and positive. They’re approachable, helpful, and genuinely invested in our success.
Throughout high school, I found it difficult to stay engaged in traditional classroom settings. Sitting through five long periods each day just didn’t suit my learning style. I knew university might not meet my educational needs, so I started seriously considering Richmond Institute. I even encouraged my school to organise a Richmond Experience through my PE class, where I got to live a “day in the life” of a student. That day confirmed for me that this was the right environment — one that matched my active, hands-on learning style perfectly.
At first, I assumed the course would be similar to school: set groups, fixed classes, and a straightforward curriculum. But my expectations have been far exceeded. One of the biggest highlights has been the Monday combined group sessions, where we collaborate and connect with students from other classes. The placement opportunities have also been exceptional. They’ve given me real-world experience, helped me grow as a person, and deepened my understanding of the sport industry.
Richmond Institute offers so much more than just two diplomas. We’ve also been supported to complete certifications like Sports Trainer Level 1, First Aid and CPR, and Mental Health First Aid. These additional qualifications are so useful and really boost our employability. The Institute also runs workshops on resumes, mock interviews, and placement preparation, which have given me practical skills and the confidence to step into the workforce.
Even in just my first term at Richmond Institute, I’ve learned so much about myself, my strengths, and my passion for sport. Engaging in every opportunity has made a huge difference in my confidence — especially in professional settings. I now feel more assured in my abilities and more connected to the industry I want to build my future in.
The most rewarding part so far has been the combination of new friendships, amazing placement opportunities, and securing a job through those experiences. I’ve made some of my best friends this year — people who share the same interests, encourage each other, and always offer support.
The culture at Richmond Institute is incredibly supportive and inclusive. It’s created a space where everyone feels welcome and motivated to grow. We work closely as a cohort — sharing placement experiences, giving feedback, and creating a fun and collaborative learning environment.
One of my placements led to a life-changing opportunity: a job with Community Care Collective (CCC), an organisation that supports people with disabilities. Through this job, I’ve had the chance to work with individuals who bring so much joy and personality to the workplace. Our role is to help them enjoy independence, social connection, and fun — things that are so important but not always easily accessible.
This job has completely shifted my perspective. It’s shown me the value of doing work you’re passionate about. I genuinely look forward to going to work each day — not just because I enjoy it, but because I’m constantly learning more about myself and the kind of difference I want to make.
I truly believe that without Richmond Institute’s partnership with CCC, I wouldn’t have had access to such an incredible opportunity.
Looking ahead, I’m so excited to keep learning and make the most of everything Richmond has to offer over the next three terms. I’m especially looking forward to the immersion trips to the Tiwi Islands, India, and Cape York — opportunities that offer even more hands-on experience, cultural insight, and personal growth.
If I could give any advice to someone figuring out what to do after high school, it would be: trust your gut. Don’t feel pressured to take the “expected” path. Uni isn’t the only option. Follow your passions and choose a course or place that suits how you learn. At the end of the day, you want to wake up excited about what you do. Don’t settle for “good enough” — go after something that brings you joy.
