Transforming My Journey: Reflecting on Term 1 of the Dual Diploma at Richmond Institute

Starting Point: A New Direction
Early last year, I found myself at a crossroads in my career, uncertain about the direction I wanted to take. I was confused about my future and unsure of what path to follow. However, I knew that I had always enjoyed subjects like Health and Human Development, Physical Education, and Business Management during my Year 12 studies, and I wanted to pursue a path that aligned with these interests.

After discussing my career thoughts with my sister, she recommended the Dual Diploma in Sport, Leadership, and Management at Richmond Institute, based on positive feedback from family friends who had completed the program. After researching the course, I became excited about the subjects it offered, such as Emotional Intelligence, Strength and Conditioning, and Managing Business Risk. It seemed like the perfect fit for me, and I am extremely grateful to be on this path today.

Expectations and Reality: A Supportive and Challenging Environment
Before starting the course, I expected to be immersed in a challenging yet supportive environment that would help me grow both personally and professionally. The Richmond Football Club and Institute have an outstanding reputation for excellence, and I anticipated gaining a deeper understanding of Sports, Leadership, and Teamwork. So far, my expectations have been exceeded in ways I didn’t anticipate. I have been surrounded by individuals who are not only passionate about their fields but also willing to mentor and guide me through new experiences. The hands-on learning approach and the opportunity to make mistakes without judgment have been integral to my growth. Additionally, the atmosphere of collaboration has encouraged me to embrace challenges and continuously improve my skills. I am excited to continue this journey and discover even more ways I can contribute and learn.

Gaining New Skills and Knowledge for Career Progression
Throughout my time in the Dual Diploma, I have gained a variety of skills and knowledge that will significantly contribute to my personal growth and career progression. For example, learning how to write professional emails and updating my resume has been invaluable in enhancing my professionalism and employability. Additionally, refining my communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills has broadened my skill set, making me more adaptable and effective in any work environment. These skills are transferable across industries and will allow me to build stronger relationships, handle challenges more effectively, and contribute meaningfully to any team I am part of. The lessons we have learned this term have already laid a solid foundation for my future career development.

The Most Rewarding Aspect: Growth and Resilience
The most rewarding part of the course so far has been the opportunity for personal growth and development. This term, I’ve had the chance to build relationships with both peers and staff members, allowing me to gain valuable insights and perspectives that have enriched my learning experience.

Challenges have also played an important role in my growth.

Although I faced setbacks, such as being rejected from placement opportunities, these experiences have taught me the importance of seeking feedback. Through this feedback, I have been able to approach challenges more effectively, develop resilience, and strengthen my adaptability. These experiences have made me more confident in my ability to face future challenges and continue progressing with a positive mindset.

Term 1 has been a transformative experience in shaping me both personally and professionally. On my first day, I was nervous and unsure of what to expect. However, I was warmly greeted by my Student Success Officer, Noah, who immediately made me feel welcome and included. His friendly and approachable nature helped ease my nerves and set a positive tone for my journey ahead.
Over the course of the term, I have gained the confidence to introduce myself to new people, both peers and staff members. These connections have made me feel more integrated within the course and the broader community, enriching my overall experience.

Additionally, activities such as the Amazing Race around the MCG, the Deaf Awareness workshop, and the Bachar Houli Cultural Awareness session have provided valuable insights and broadened my perspective on diversity and leadership. These experiences have reinforced the importance of engaging with different communities, which has further shaped my personal and professional development. Overall, Term 1 has been an eye-opening and rewarding experience, helping me grow in confidence and build meaningful relationships.

Looking Ahead: Embracing Opportunities in the Future
As the Diploma continues throughout the year, I am excited about the many opportunities that lie ahead. I look forward to participating in new subjects and continuing to strengthen my relationships with both peers and staff members, while also building new connections. One of the most exciting aspects of the course is the upcoming placement, which will provide hands-on experience and new challenges. I am confident that with the support of my peers and staff, I will gain valuable experiences that will further my growth.

Advice for Future Students: Embrace the Journey
If I were to offer advice to anyone considering this course, it would be to approach it with an open mind and embrace every opportunity that comes your way. Maximising these opportunities is the best way to make the most of this year-long journey. Not everyone has the chance to complete the Dual Diploma, so it’s important to fully commit and make the most of it. While this course has certainly challenged my thinking, it is through these challenges that I have grown and developed so much already. I am truly enjoying the experience and look forward to all the possibilities yet to come.
