How I found my way through Richmond Institute’s doors might be a little different to most students who have been before me. Unfortunately, Richmond Institute wasn’t able to make it to my school, so I had no idea it was an option. After I graduated, I tried the traditional university pathway, but I quickly realised it wasn’t the right fit for me. I still wanted to pursue higher education and work towards something I was passionate about; I just needed a more hands-on and practical approach, and wasn’t really sure where to go or how to find it.
Sport had always been a huge part of my life. I grew up playing soccer, watched my dad play soccer and my brother play footy, so I had been surrounded by sport for as long as I could remember. After finishing high school and not really loving university, I wasn’t sure where I fit or if there was something for me out there. I spent the next few years working in hospitality and customer service roles, unsure of what direction I wanted to go in.
It wasn’t until the beginning of last year, when I started getting involved in local football more, that something clicked. Finding RISL not long after made me realise there were other, more hands-on and industry-based options out there, and that a career in sport was a genuine possibility. The information sessions and student meet and greet day showed me that I could turn something I loved into a real career.
When Term 1 rolled around, I was excited but also wrecked with nerves. Coming in a little older than many of my classmates, I was very aware stepping into a new environment and wasn’t sure what to expect. However, our Student Support Officers (SSOs) did an amazing job helping us settle in and building new connections. Before long, I had met so many wonderful people, made great friendships, and connected with some incredible role models, and it all felt like second nature.
One of the things I enjoy most about Richmond Institute is the incredible support from the staff and teachers. They are so generous with their time, and you can really tell how much they want every student to succeed. From résumé writing to mock interviews, industry advice and placement opportunities, every aspect of preparing students for the workforce is covered.
The placement opportunities have been a major highlight of my experience so far. Through Richmond Institute, I have been fortunate enough to work with Richmond’s digital team, photographing the Richmond VFL side and learning directly from some of the best in the business. I completed an internship with Richmond’s membership team, which gave me valuable insight into the inner workings of the club and allowed me to meet some amazing people. I was also fortunate enough to assist at a Richmond Rookies clinic, which was really fun and an incredibly rewarding experience — it also allowed me to connect so much more with my classmates. I have also just started with the Yarra Junior Football League as a Media Officer, which has been really great, and I have learnt so much already.
Through the experiences I have had so far studying at Richmond Institute, I have found myself in rooms I never could have dreamed of. I have been able to learn from and connect with people I never imagined I would have had the opportunity to meet before undertaking the dual diploma. Richmond Institute hasn’t just helped me put my foot in the door — it has helped me knock the door down. The placements and pathways team work tirelessly behind the scenes to create amazing opportunities, and because of their support, I feel confident that I will leave this course with the skills, experience and network to carve out my place within the sporting industry.
My advice to anyone considering studying at Richmond Institute is simple: if you love sport, enjoy a hands-on approach to learning and want real industry experience, back yourself and give it a go. This course has taught me so much, both professionally and personally, and it has pushed me well beyond my comfort zone in the best possible ways.
If you had told me at the start of the year that by the halfway mark I would have completed over 100 hours of placement, built an incredible network and made friendships that I hope to last a lifetime, I would not have believed you. Richmond Institute’s motto is “Just Say Yes,” and it couldn’t be truer.
