From Day One to Now: Jess’s term 1 journey at Richmond Institute

Term 1—where do I even start? It’s been a term filled with new memories, new knowledge, and new experiences.

A large part of my time at Richmond Institute has been centred around building friendships. I am a very outgoing person, so when it came to meeting new people, I was ready to dive into the deep end. From the beginning, I formed supportive, like-minded friendships with others who shared similar goals and a positive outlook on the program.

The coursework has consistently kept me engaged, particularly through real-world classes such as Work Health and Safety. It’s a subject I learnt a lot from, and one that I know will be highly relevant in future job opportunities.

I’ve also been fortunate to gain hands-on industry experience. I have worked with Melbourne Storm as part of their Corporate Team, assisting with setting up corporate entrances and pack down. More recently, I was successful in gaining a place in the Strength and Conditioning Internship, where I support school-led gym classes and information sessions. I am also part of the Social Media Internship, assisting with content creation, article writing, and promoting Richmond Institute.

One of the biggest highlights of my time at Richmond Institute has been the friendships I’ve built. When I was first accepted into the course, I didn’t know anyone and felt nervous about stepping into “adulthood” and the “real” world. However, experiences such as High Performance Day encouraged me to step outside of my comfort zone and connect with others.

The supportive environment has made a huge difference. Staff actively create opportunities for students to connect, and everyone is open and welcoming. This made it much easier to build confidence and form genuine friendships.

I have also really enjoyed the class structure and the content we are learning. During high school, I wasn’t particularly engaged or confident in my academic abilities, and by the end of Year 12, I didn’t plan on pursuing further study.

However, my first day at Richmond Institute completely changed my perspective on education. The learning environment is engaging, supportive, and focused on real-world application. It has allowed me to develop my creative and practical strengths while studying topics that feel relevant and aligned with my future career goals.

Richmond Institute has shown me that further education doesn’t have to follow a traditional path, it can be hands-on, inspiring, and genuinely enjoyable.

RISL has created an environment where building friendships, making new connections, and developing positive relationships with teachers comes naturally. I have formed what I believe will be lifelong connections with people I met on day one. The teachers are always encouraging and supportive, helping students strive to be their best.

My advice for anyone considering studying at Richmond Institute is simple: apply. I have gained valuable knowledge, built lifelong friendships, and experienced real-world industry opportunities that don’t come around every day.
